Action Alert: Peer to Pier Pelican Protection

December 14, 2021

Dear Conservancy Board Members,

As mentioned at the board meeting today, Naples City Council will vote Wednesday, December 15th to approve closing the Naples Pier on Sundays for a trial period between January-May 2022. This closure is important to reduce the number of injured pelicans admitted to the von Arx Wildlife Hospital.

Please email the letter below to City Council members in support of the closure. Director of Policy, Nicole Johnson, believes City Council’s focus is on tallying votes in favor and in opposition; she recommends the message be clear and concise.

Good Afternoon Mayor Heitmann and City Council Members,

I am emailing to ask City Council to vote in support of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s request, as well as the CSAB’s recommendation, to implement a pilot program to restrict fishing one day a week (Sunday) at the Naples Pier during the months of January through May 2022.

The Conservancy’s recommendation is an important step to finding a balance between angling activities at the Naples Pier and the needs of native wildlife that inhabit the area around the Naples Pier.

Sincerely,

A Note From Us

We appreciate the support and generosity the public, board members, donors, and the community has had on the Conservancy of Southwest Florida throughout the years, today and tomorrow. The Pelican Protection Program is at the city council level because you as a community care about the native wildlife just as much as we do. Thank you for helping us protect Southwest Florida’s water, land, wildlife, and future.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Dalton Discovery Center reopening this Saturday, December 18th. Spread the word and mark your calendars!
