Everglades restoration once again made headlines last week when Governor DeSantis and the US Army Corps of Engineers signaled their desire to expedite portions of the construction of the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir, allowing the state to take lead on constructing two pump stations, while the Corps would focus on building the reservoir.
The EAA is often touted as the crown jewel of Everglades restoration, since its key location south of Lake Okeechobee will allow for more water flow to the southern Everglades during the dry season. The reservoir and its associated stormwater treatment area currently under construction will be 17,000 acres in size, and play a key role in recharging the Biscayne Aquifer and helping balance the salinity in Florida Bay. Conservancy staff (Sr. Environmental Policy Advisor, Amber Crooks, and Sr. Water Policy Advisor, Tammy Ash) were among those invited to attend the press event, which took place during the Environmental Permitting Summer School on Marco Island on July 18, 2025.
