On August 29 through 31, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida welcomed the Greater Naples Fire Rescue District to our campus for their Advanced Firefighter training. A course was created in our unoccupied Blair Dormitory to conduct training on rescuing a trapped or lost firefighter, referred to as the “Mayday mindset.”
As the Blair Dormitory was being prepared for demolition, this building was found to be a unique circumstance that allowed the firefighters to further their skills. Without the need to be particularly neat or cautious due to the building’s vacancies, the fire crew was able to approach the training as if it were a real situation.
It is not often that we have the opportunity to train in a building that allows us to have “real life” training. Most of our training is conducted in an atmosphere in which we have to be careful or already familiar with the “layout” of the building.
